If all this material is available on the internet for free, why have I gone to the trouble of publishing it in book form? Two reasons: 1) Some people may prefer to have it all collected into book form. 2) My major reason is simply to get the material listed in Books in Print, and therefore listed by online booksellers, where people studying this topic have a better chance to find it.
My publisher is iUniverse, a print-on-demand publisher. They do not print books until they are actually ordered, so they do not lose money on excess inventory. The cost per book would be lower if thousands were printed, but this is the most efficient way to publish low-volume books. I am impressed with the quality of the typesetting, printing and binding. I get a small royalty for the books sold through online bookstores, but I doubt I will make any money on it. I do not get a royalty for the books I sell directly.
